Five Dutch productions are screening at DOC NYC, the largest festival in the US dedicated to documentary film.
Still: The Dmitriev Affair - Jessica Gorter
Two Dutch productions are part of DOC NYC's International Competition. Firstly, Jessica Gorter's feature documentary The Dmitriev Affair* (prod. Zeppers). Her film is celebrating its US premiere. SEE NL already interviewed Gorter regarding the film's world premiere at the Krakow Film Festival earlier this year. The documentary follows 60-year-old Yuri Dmitriev. Deep inside the Russian forests, against the wishes of the authorities, he searches for mass graves from the era of Stalin’s terror against his own people, until one day he is arrested and sentenced to 15 years in a penal colony.
Secondly, Total Trust* by Jialing Zhang. The feature doc is minority co-produced by Witfilm and world premiered at the Copenhagen International Documentary Festival in March. The film, also having its US premiere in New York, gives a disturbing look at surveillance technology—its prevalence, abuse, and the stifling effect on those whose lives are monitored by the Chinese government
The Menstruation Station by Miguel Luis is world premiering in the SHORTS: THE PEOPLE VS. programme. Luis produced the short doc with Nicole Olwagen. The film shines a light on activists who install shelves and stations of feminine hygiene products around Amsterdam as a means to help people across the city.
In the SHORTS: OUR CLIMATE / OUR CRISIS programme you will find Ilja Willems' When the grass must go (prod. Jos de Putter), having its international premiere. The short doc about a landscaper in Nevada is not her only film screening in New York. Her doc Friendly Fridges (prod. Jos de Putter) is actually part of SHORTS: NEW YORK, NEW YORK and is celebrating its international premiere as well.
DOC NYC takes place in person November 8 - 16 and online 8 - 26. For more information, click here. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
