Grandmamauntsistercat wins Berlinale TEDDY AWARD

The Dutch-Polish short film Grandmamauntsistercat by Zuza Banasińska (pictured below) has won the TEDDY AWARD for BEST SHORT FILM at the Berlin International Film Festival. The TEDDY AWARD is for films that communicate queer themes that engender more tolerance, acceptance and solidarity in society.

Press Release by Video Power. Maastricht, 27 february 2024

In Grandmamauntsistercat, the classical Slavic witch Baba Yaga turns into a "prehistoric goddess from the time of the matriarchy". The film is entirely edited with images from the archives of the Polish Educational Film Studio that served as  teaching material under the communist regime. From this anthropocentric and often sexist material grows a moving portrait of a “multi-species” matriarchal family striving for freedom and empowerment. Grandmamauntsistercat is distributed by Video Power and the Eye Film Institute. The film premiered earlier this year at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

About the TEDDY AWARD
