Still: Quota - Job, Joris & Marieke
International competition
Animated short Quota by Oscar nominated filmmakers Job, Joris & Marieke (selected for both the International competition as well as the Youth Section in Clermont-Ferrand) shows their concern about the current climate crisis. In this dark comedy every global citizen is mandated to participate in an app that tracks their CO2 emissions, but it makes little impression. Until they discover what happens when their designated quota has been reached.
The short had its world premiere in TIFF's Short Cuts program, where it received an Honourable Mention. Read the interview SEE NL had with the trio on that occasion here. International sales are handled by SND Films and Kaboom Distribution handles festival distribution.
Looking she said I forget* by Swiss-Dutch director Naomi Pacifique and produced by Idle Eye recounts the story of Lou, who, having just moved to Amsterdam, prepares her new apartment that she will share with her partner, Joel. For now though, Joel is on a trip with an intimate other. Confronted with the complexities of her non-monogamous relationship, Lou shifts her gaze to the rhythms of her new city. The short celebrated its world premiere in the Pardi di domani National Competition at Locarno Film Festival. SEE NL spoke to the director about her film in the run up to Locarno, you can read the full article here.
Lab competition
In animated debut Skroll by Marten Visser (prod. il Luster) humans and some kind of gnomes have posted videos on social media platforms in their animated dimension. This film is a short compilation of these clips. An animated random flow of social media content that really ‘will surprise you’ and is worth to ‘watch till the end’. But number three will not shock you. At Clermont Ferrand it is not only selected for the Lab Competition, but also for the late night WTF program. Earlier festival selection include Animakom FEST Bilbao and ANIMA Brussels. International sales are handled by SND Films and Kaboom Distribution handles festival distribution.
SEE NL interviewed Visser about his film before Clermont-Ferrand, read the interview here.
Memories of an Unborn Sun by Marcel Mrejen, a minority Dutch co-production supported by the Mondriaan Fund, is also selected for the Lab Competition. Every year, thousands of Chinese emigrants go to work on building sites in Algeria, living on isolated bases in the desert. Some die there, without ever being repatriated. Based on eyewitness accounts, hearsay and fake news, Marcel Mrejen constructs a parable with dystopian overtones exploring the relentless (neo)colonial exploitation of the Algerian territory. The short film had its world premiere at Visions de Réel in Nyon.
Other programs
Included in the XR Panorama program is 8 Billion Selves a VR work by Nemo Vos (prod. Dutch Digital Collectibles), short documentary On a Smaller Scale (Jasper van Leeningen) will screen in the POLAR Thrills program and Thank You for Your Patience! By Simon van der Zande is part of the European Short Film Audience Awards program.
