Filmmaker Nataliya and main character father Sergei came to the West from the Soviet Union in the '90s, searching for freedom. In OTETS, Nataliya converses with her now-deceased companion: did he ever find freedom in the free West? To her, Sergei remains the ideal father figure, but his biological children reveal a darker legacy. His quest for freedom was a lifelong battle against an ‘inner sniper guard,’ a fear that was ingrained in him by his homeland. He passes on his ‘sniper guard’ to his children instead of granting them freedom.
